This Week's Character Mentoring Mesage
I Can Choose Again

Remarkable, positive results occur in the lives of those who learn the fine art of choosing, once again.

Author, Bruce Barton, once wrote: "Nothing splendid has ever been achieved except by those who dared believe that something inside of them was superior to circumstance." Certainly, in every person's turbulent or discouraging life circumstances there is opportunity to discover the personal courage to stand on rock-solid thinking: I can choose again.

When Mahatma Gandhi was a young lawyer, he was constantly challenged by his raging temper. His anger often consumed his responses to circumstances around him. In his twenties he faced a challenging life moment when it appeared his anger would destroy him. In that event Gandhi drew upon inner strength. He committed his energies to transform the anger that boiled inside him to be directed for useful and meaningful purposes. Gandhi decided: I can choose again. To read the history of his life, we know he fulfilled his mission. He became a leading voice of non-violence that transformed a nation.

We do not need to be a great public leader to embrace…I can choose again. Personal failure, disappointment, fear, prejudice, hatred, jealousy, or insecurity serve up important moments in which we open ourselves to a new path, a new way of thinking, and a commitment to fight hard to discover that our past need not predict our future.

Will you live as a victim or take steps to be the victor over painful circumstances, bad decisions or a poor attitude? With a playful heart I have said to many kids over the years, "There is only one letter that distinguished a champ from a chump." So, too, there is a tiny, yet mighty thought that determines who will use their circumstances to seek renewal. The champ inside us always is finding a way to say: I can choose again.

Do you want to help the kids you love become Kids of Character? Help them practice those four little words, I can choose again. What a gift you will be giving to help raise the character bar.
